Newsletter-Week of 8/31

News from 3P
Week of: August 31, 2015

Reading: This week students will be reading a story called “Pepita Talks Twice.” With this story, we will continue to focus on story elements, character traits and vocabulary. We will also introduce making connections. There are 3 types of connections a reader can make: text to self, text to text and text to world. *** Students should be reading at least 25 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: The focus this week will be on capitalization. Students will review when to use capitals in their writing. Please encourage your child to reread and make corrections within their daily work and homework.

Writing: We will be working on opinion writing. Opinion writing includes the same components as persuasive writing; we are just using a different name from Common Core standards. The past 2 weeks, we have done whole group opinion writing and focused on using linking words such as: because, for instance, for example, in other words, etc….

Social Studies: We are finished our study of continents and oceans and will test on it this week. Then we will start to study Illinois. We will focus on its climate, natural features, human features and the different ecosystems there are. We will also map out Illinois to learn where major cities, rivers and lakes are located. There is also a field trip form coming home in the next couple of weeks. We will be heading to Danada Farm when we begin to study Pioneers. This trip will be paid for by PTA…. THANK YOU PTA!!!! J

Newsletter-Week of 8/24

News from 3P
Week of: August 24, 2015

Reading: This week students will be reading a story called “Officer Buckle and Gloria.” With this story, we will be focusing on the story elements and looking into the main characters. There will be a lot of whole group discussion with this book. The following questions can be asked of your child: what is the story you are reading this week?, what is the setting?, who are the main characters?, what is the problem/solution?. These will help to instill the importance of the story elements we will be focusing on. Students should be reading at least 25 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: The first week of school is a transition week. As a third grader, we will be focusing on simple conventions (capital letters, punctuation, etc…). Please make sure that your child is taking his/her time to write neatly and use the proper grammar.

Writing: Last week, students began their GLURP paper! Don’t know what a GLURP is, please ask your third grader! J We focused on a simple third grade paragraph. We will be doing our final copies this week and they will be posted for the upcoming Curriculum Night!

Social Studies: We will be continuing to study continents and oceans this week. We will have a quiz next week and then move on from the big picture of the world to just the Midwest and specifically, IllinoisJ.

Math: Last week, students were pretested over their multiplication/division facts of 2’s and 5’s. We broke up into different math groups to begin learning these concepts. There will be nightly homework so please make sure to check in with your child. Our focus this week will be studying the concept of multiplication and 5’s. Students not only need to be able to multiply and know the answer, but they also need to be able to draw pictures and talk about the idea of repeated addition.

Note: Paper copies of the newsletter will be sent home this week and next week. Beginning after Labor Day, a link to the newsletter will be sent via email. Happy 3rd Day of 3rd Grade! We are having fun today making #3rdDayof3rdGrade Selfies!

We also spent time with students from the other 3rd grade classes learning about THEME and how to find out the themes of stories we've already read this year. Then we got to work in groups to write a story using one of the themes we learned about!
