Libyan Desert Glass

I want to tell you about a Libyan Desert Glass. A meteor hit 25 million years ago. It was so hot it melted the sand to glass. Then it cooled. Now you can see pieces of the meteor in the sand.

Peer Teaching

During Science this week, the kids worked in groups to read about different parts of the solar system. Then they worked together to figure out how to best share what they learned. Here are the results!

Newsletter--Week of 1/25

News from 3P
Week of: January 25, 2016

Reading and Language Arts: This week we will be reading a variety of passages and focusing on asking questions. When a reader asks questions, it helps them to better understand the text. **Students should be reading at least 20 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: We will focus on a brief review of verbs this week so that we are ready to begin adverbs next week.

Writing: This week in writing, we will continue working on our informational writing piece about how seasons are different.

Science: This week we will continue our study of space. We will move our focus to the solar system and the placement of the planets.

Math: This week continues with fractions. Students will continue to compare fractions. We will also continue with our multi-step word problems.

Jamboree Donations: Our classroom theme basket this year is Ice Cream Shop. If you are able to donate any sort of ice cream related items (scoop, cones, sprinkles, toppings, bowls, giftcards, etc…) that would be great!! J

Newsletter--Week of 1/19

Week of: January 19, 2016

Reading and Language Arts: We will finish up our study of the book The Hundred Dresses. Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on character traits and theme. **Students should be reading at least 20 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: We will finish up working on possessive nouns.

Writing: This week in writing we will begin a new informational writing piece about how seasons are different.

Science: We will be finishing up the study of space and patterns. Study guides will come home Wednesday and test on Friday of this week.

Math: This week continues with fractions. Students will be comparing fractions. We will also be reviewing fraction blocks and fraction lines and where fractions are located on each.  

Jamboree Donations: Our classroom theme basket this year is Ice Cream Shop. If you are able to donate any sort of ice cream related items (scoop, cones, sprinkles, toppings, bowls, giftcards, etc…) that would be great!! J We have already gotten the following: bowls, spoons, scoop, and sprinkles.

Newsletter--Week of 1/11

News from 3P
Week of: January 11, 2016

Reading and Language Arts: We are beginning a new novel study this week! Students will be switching classes to read The Hundred Dresses. Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on character traits and theme. **Students should be reading at least 20 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: We will continue to learn about singular and plural possessive nouns.

Writing: This week in writing, we will focus on informational text. Students will be writing a How-To paper on a topic of their choosing.

Science: We will be reviewing the following vocabulary: star, axis and rotation vs. revolution. We will also be talking about the seasons and where the Earth faces during each season. We will also be discussing Moon phases.  

Math: This week we will continue with fractions. Students will be learning how to break apart groups in equal fractions. We will also continue to work on reading and writing fractions. Third graders will also begin working on multi-step word problems. We will begin this as a whole class this week.  This process involves students explaining an answer to a story problem and the process of HOW they came to that answer.

Week of: January 4, 2016

Reading and Language Arts: This week we will continue our focus on the main idea and key details of literature texts. We will be reading the story, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears and working with that text. **Students should be reading at least 20 minutes for homework every night!

Grammar: We will start working on possessive nouns this week.

Writing: This week in writing, we will focus on our New Year’s goals. Students will be writing How-To papers explaining how to accomplish some of their goals. If you are in and around the third grade hall, please stop in to see the goals your child has set for themselves.   

Science: This week we are ‘rocketing’ into the theme of space! We will talk about the following vocabulary: star, axis and rotation vs. revolution.

Math: This week we will be starting fractions. Groups will be focusing on how to write a fraction and what a fraction is. We will also introduce numerator and denominator.
